It’s a pleasure to be here in Portland and have the
opportunity to participate in the Transportation 2000 Conference. I live in
Scottsdale, Arizona, and on the way over, I was feeling pretty excited about the prospect
of finally finding some shade, and perhaps getting rained on. So I can’t tell
you how disappointed I am to see the sun shining and the weather so bright and cheerful.
Today, I’m going to talk about transportation challenges in terms of
categories of solution options. But first I’d like to briefly review the
factors that are driving our search for a new paradigm for personal mobility.
Basically, these new ideas are designed to solve problems.
