Instructions

Use Your Screen Saver Feature
Bright stationary areas on your screen can leave a permanent impression if your computer is left on and inactive for extended periods.   Potentially troublesome features include light-colored icons, bright areas of an open but unused program, and bright objects in a background image.   Using a  Screen Saver utility can prevent this type of damage to your monitor.   To turn on your built-in Windows Screen Saver, right-click anywhere on your Windows desktop, select "Properties" from the menu, then select the "Screen Saver" tab.  Open the Screen Saver menu and select the desired Screen Saver option.  Press "OK" to activate the Screen Saver and close the menu.

Use a Desktop Image That Matches Your Resolution Setting
In order to correctly fit your desktop, the background image must match the resolution setting of your monitor.  You can determine the resolution setting while you are on line.  Just minimize your browser, then right-click anywhere on your Windows desktop and select "Properties" from the menu.   Select the "Settings" tab in the "Properties" menu.   The resolution of your monitor will be indicated under  "Desktop Area."   Write down the resolution setting, then press "Cancel" to close the menu.   Return to your browser and select an image that matches your resolution setting. The links to the right of the thumbnails indicate the resolution of the desktop image.  To see a larger version of the image before downloading it, left-click on the thumbnail image.    Actual background images are sharper than the enlarged images viewed by clicking on the thumbnails.

To Download and Install the Image

Step 1: Save the Image File to Your Drive:   Click on a link that matches the resolution setting of your monitor (next to the desired image), then select "Save it to disk" or "Save this file to disk" and save the file to your hard drive.

Step 2: Unzip the File:  Each image is contained in a compressed (zipped) file for quick transfer over the Internet.   To use the image, you must first decompress it (unpack the zipped file) using a decompression program like WinZip.   If you do not have a decompression program, you can get a free copy of WinZip via the link on the Free Downloads page.

Step 3: Install the Image on Your Windows Desktop:   Place the image in your Windows* directory (folder), then right-click anywhere on your Windows desktop and select "Properties" from the menu.   When the "Properties" menu appears, select the "Background" tab.  Your new background image should be among those listed in the "Wallpaper" menu.   Select the image, then press "OK" to apply it and close the menu.

* If you are unsure of where to place the image, you can place it in its own folder then browse to it using the "Browse" option in the "Properties/Background" menu.

To Remove a Background Image

Right-click anywhere on your Windows desktop, then select "Properties" from the menu that appears.   When the "Properties" menu appears, select the "Background" tab.  Select a different background image from the options listed in the "Wallpaper" menu, or select "None,"  then press "OK" to apply the new background and close the menu.
